windshield wiper has a mind of its own

It was raining here last night and when I turned on the windshield wipers on to the first setting set to a 15 second pause in between they would just continue wiping without stopping and then stop in the middle of the windshield and than start again 15 seconds later. When I put the stalk up to medium speed constant or full speed constant it would continuing wiping than shut off completely until I move the windshield wiper stalk again. It is kind of hard to explain and I could probably post a video maybe tomorrow for those who dont understand.
My question is the motor seems to be working fine. Do you think it can be the windshield wiper stalk?

Sometimes wiper problems with stopping and starting in the wrong place are indicative of the wiper park switch inside the motor failing. This would mean a motor replacement.
Before going that route though, check the that the two wiper relays (on US cars, drivers side, brake booster compartment, 2 relays closest to windshield) have not unseated from their sockets. Also try swapping those two relays with one another and see if the symptoms change.
As you say, there could also be an intermittant problem in the stalk. To test that you have to open up the steering column cover and cleck continuity in the various switch positions. If you have JTIS, they are in figure 14.1 of the electrical diagram. You can also download the '98 electrical diagram from www.jagrepair.com

Well start with the suggestions I gave with the relays...that is really easy.
If that turn up nothing, then check continuity on the stalk switch using the circuit diagram.
Only if all that checks out would I look at the motor.
The other possiblity is the Body Processor Module, but I think that is least likely to be the problem, especially if the wipers are the only system malfunctioning.
