I have yet to see a XK8/XKR with a front license plate here in California. Mine originally came from Florida and it never had a bracket or a plate on the front. I do know they will give you a ticket if you don't have one. My son purchased a new Mazda 3 and it didn't have a mounting bracket for a front plate so he never put one on. He received a ticket from a meter maid when he parked it on the street. Now, I just make sure I never park it on the street.
Shortly after I bought my ‘05 XKR in 2016, I was heading north on the San Marcos Pass road outside Santa Barbara at night. It’s mostly 2-lane highway with no passing allowed, so when I came to a passing zone, I stomped on the accelerator, passed five cars at about 85 mph, and then returned to the legal speed limit as the passing lane ended. Unfortunately, one of the five was an unmarked police car and, as I looked in my rear view mirror, I saw red lights flashing. The officer checked & found I had a clean driving record; as he walked around the car, he noticed it had no front license plate. He told me “I’m going to give you a big break — I’m letting you off with a warning, but you need to get that license plate fixed.” He then handed me a “fix-it” ticket for $25. Needless to say, I gladly added a license plate & paid the $25 fine.
Just curious how and where you mounted it. Mine is not a daily driver so I don't worry too much about it as I see a lot of cars in the Palm Springs area without them. Most are high end cars such as Porsche. I have encountered many cops around the area and they seem to ignore. If I received a $25 "fix-it" ticket I would just put some double back tape and take a photo. Glad to see that you were not given a ticket for going 85. I have had cops pass me on the freeway when going that speed on the 10 between Palm Springs and L.A.
Looking at a 8 to 10 year old Audi S5 or a Mercedes SL500.
I like the power hard top of the SL. I had a BMW 335i with the power hard top and that was the best thing about the car.

Glad you are OK!!! Mind if I stick in my opinion? I found hard top converts lose something for me. Had a 2010 Z4 (BMW) and found with top up you lose all sense of a convertible. Its what I like in a soft top, its still a convert with top up. Also cannot pack it up for a weekend trip and drive to and fro destination top down. As for your picks, I think you'll find those a bit sterile. The MB AMG SL50/SL55 are fun, and they have a nice exterior look. I too have a 2004 XK8, and love the lil bits of interior deco they added starting that year, but still had the slim nose with no body skirts. I would never go for another year. That being, maybe look at the Lexus SC430. Its a love or hate one. Its hard top convert, and the interior deco, with wood, brushed aluminium and leather bits is unarguably beautiful like the 2004 XKs It also has a perfect sound system with Mark Levinson.

y it's self or did it have a little help? Probably, and at today's Parts and Labor cost, it's a Total.....it's a shame, as it was a beautiful Car!. Now some Wrecker Guy will sell the Wheels and all the other good stuff and that will be the last anyone sees of this once beautiful Jaguar XK8 Convertible… and CE2...I'm certainly glad that it protected you!
It's part # C2N2746. It's made of black plastic with a curved back that fits against the grille; it's mounted using self-tapping screws that go into plastic behind the grille. It cost about $56 (yes, a rip-off).
I don't normally drive my XK8 over winter, but her emissions test was is due, enabling me to renew my registration (just emissions - no safety test or MOT equivalent here in Utah).
Unfortunately I had to have a check engine light reset (damn you gas cap lid!), so for the emission test to pass you have to do a fair bit of driving or the testing rig picks up you just reset it and fails you - I did 200 miles but got a few pictures along the way 👍
She's due a good clean now, but passed with flying colors!
Great shots with the mountains in the background. I really enjoy mountain drives, roads with hairpins, steep climbs and descents, stunning scenery and all whilst in a Jaaag!
No mountains in Florida except the "Expedition Everest at Disney's Animal Kingdom....
I have been debating with myself wether I should replace the 17” Lamina wheels on my 2001 MY convertible with 18” Flutes or 18” Impeller wheels like yours and your post has convinced to buy the Impellers. Thanks again
Gorgeous scenery. Makes me think of our ski trip to Lake Tahoe in February 1986. It snowed a total of 9 feet in the five days we were there. Best skiing of my life....
Quote "Unfortunately I had to have a check engine light reset (damn you gas cap lid!)"
I struggle with this every year. The testing station doesn't have an adapter that fits my '97 gas cap. They usually give me a waiver.
The Bulbs we talked about can be had on eBay! They are the same little Bulb for the Blinker Light and are Amber Bulbs coated in Chrome so they want show through as Amber until the Light is turned on....The Crystal Clear Blinker Lens came from: Performance Lights | High Performance Car Lighting
also, I don't think the XK8 Convertible came with the "R" Performance Package, therefore you should remove the Badge on the Left Front Fender! Get a British Flag or something like that, since you are from there...
The country in the background of those Photos is really pretty, We have to go to far West Texas and New Mexico to see Mountains like those....Here in Houston, we have to stop on top of a Freeway Intersection Turnstile for our Mountain Views!
