X100 XKR Convertible roof lock down mechanism creak/rattle
Hi,
When the roof on my XKR is closed I suffer from a creaking noise from the area above the windscreen which seems to me to be a problem with the mechanism that locks the roof in place. The roof opens and closes as it should and does lock down OK but then creaks or rattles as you drive along. With the roof down there is no such noise. Does anyone have any idea exactly what the problem is and how it can be fixed as it really is quite annoying.
Many thank for any help that can be given.

If you want to see how to remove that plate you may find reading this useful. Just scroll down till you get to the bit about removing it and digging through the mastic etc. You will see what I mean when you find it.

Apologies for the delay in replying. I have been without internet for 7 days now and it is currently very intermittent.
OK, so with the roof fully down I removed the latch cover (with thanks to frankc for making it relatively easy) and everything appears to be OK with nothing loose. All screws etc. were checked and found to be tight. With roof partly up the linkage was free to move very slightly but that is to be expected as it is then not in a locked (open or closed) condition. I then removed and checked the guide pins on the front underside of the roof and found the plastic coating to have been rubbed away from the tapered edge of the hole through the pins. When the roof is closed this would mean that the pins would be held in place with a metal to metal join which might create the creaking noise. The pins however are no longer available so cannot be replaced. I tried coating the mating surfaces with copper grease but that did not make any difference.
Replacing the latch cover was much harder than getting if off. The left hand concealed screw just would not go in, so I eventually had to replace it with a similar but slightly longer screw before it would go. Putting mastic back over the top of the screws was also a "fun" job!
Any further ideas?
Thanks
Stuart

Thanks to all who have offered ideas to help with this problem, including those linked in to this thread. I have done 3 things as suggested:
- Removed the 3 fittings on the front of the hood, cleaned up the plastic where some has rubbed away and sprayed them with 4 coats of plastidip before refitting them
- Spayed the 3 locking mechanisms with dry graphite
- Painted silicon lubricant on to the rubber seal on the top of the windscreen that the hood seals on to.
The net result is a creak and rattle free hood, just proven over a 1500 miles round trip from Scotland to Wales and England.
What a great thing this forum is.
