Xenon to Halogen headlight swap
Hi,
i need to replace XENON headlights to ''classic'' halogen. Xenon and halogen headlights have got different connectors. I want to ask if someone have got experience with this? I saw wiring diagram but in not sure about the right connection. I need to know how connect xenon wires to the classic halogen connector.
Thank you
Martin

Martin,
1) what year is the car?
2) you cannot just swap.
3) do you understand your practically going dark to a large extent? (Safety?)
Xenon are energized and run through a high voltage transformer (very high voltage, you don't want to touch it) called a ballast.
Halogen bulb is 12volts.
You would have to find the 12volt feed to the ballast in each light, splice a Halogen compatible female socket in and run it to the bulb mount.
But why??
Friend, one of the biggest complaints about the earlier X100s is the **** poor lightning from the factory low beams. Many, if not all of us "upgrade" to extra bright halogens, only to find marginal improvements at best, chalk it up to waste of money and buy LED or Xenon upgrades.
Hope you know what your getting into.
BTW the year would help us understand id this was an aftermarket xenon add on (socket may be there) or factory.

Hi,
thank you very much. I bought RHD car and if i want to register it in EU. I our country (Czech Republic) they need EUR headlights on the car. I tried to find some EUR xenons, but its not possible. ( I saw some pair, but they cost more than 1200E) So i bought cheap EUR halogen lamps and want to replace it. After they measure it and give me a '' paper'' maybe i will replace it back to xenon. (My car is 2002, 4,2, XK8 - xenons are stock silver/black headlights)
I know its possible (someone told me that) but i need to be 100% sure.
Best regards
Martin

Hi Martin,
thanks, lets try to help you out. First lets be sure we are using the same terms.
Bulb - the glass unit with a filament that lights up.
Headlight Housing (we will call it Housing)- the glass, metal, and plastic unit that holds the bulb, contains reflectors, and sends the light through the glass to illuminate the road.
Bulb connector - the plastic end of the wire that attaches to the bulb to send electricity to the light to illuminate it.
You now have an EU compliant Halogen 12volt bulb and would like to use it.
The car has non EU compliant Xenon HID headlights installed.
You want to convert these to work with 12volt EU bulbs.
Are you saying that you must change the Headlight Housing? If yes please tell us why. Won't the Halogen bulb fit?
if No, the Halogen bulb fits, but you need a proper bulb connector, let us know.
When you say need to know which cable is which, it is confusing for me. Please say more. Are you just trying to find the 12volt wire in? Since your car came with HID I don't think there's a hidden connector in there.
thanks for your patience. Look forward to helping you.

Hi John,
Thank you. No, i want replace whole headlights. I will replace whole xenon headlight to halogen headlights. Than i must resolve different connectors. Im looking to wiring diagrams and trying to find out which wire ii which. (One is front lamp, one is Side marker, one is ground (on xenon are 2 grounds),... I think only chance is to find it in wiring diagram but i tried to ask if someone tried same thing before ,)

M., each bulb except thr HID Bulbs are direct connection to 12volt wire supplying power.
How to find 12volt supply for HID? Find the ballast box by back tracing the one or 2 wires now connected to xenon bulb. This box will have 3 or 4 wires:
1) high voltage trigger out. (Insulation will be different on this).
2) high voltage power to bulb. I suppose some kits could wrap these 2 together, but it'll look different.
3) ground wire.
4) 12volts in. Should be obvious as the only power in to the ballast..
Connect Halogen to12volt. Frankly since Halogen H1 bulbs are so common you should be able to find aftermarket female pretty ez.
