You two really impress me! I'm a mere 71 and do very little of my own mechanical work, because I'm not that terrific a mechanic, find it hard on my neck (and have for many years), and would be doing it at the expense of getting building projects done. Since time is limited and something will have to get hired done, I'd rather do the building and leave most of the mechanicking to others. I'm fortunate that my son lives next door, is way better at mechanics than I, and also helps me with building stuff. We seem to have a list of that stuff to do that will last several lifetimes. That said, while I have no interest in working on my other three vehicles, I do plan to do some of the work on my Jag. It's special.

Congratulations, Ray! Great car in beautiful condition. I considered that car for a couple of weeks and came quite close to going for it. The metallic green scared us (wife and me both) off but I liked the seller and tried to get past the "not quite BRG" thing, I really did. Had it been close enough to me to run over and look at it in person, perhaps I would have gone for it. Had it been real BRG I'd have flown right down and bought it in a heartbeat. As it happens, I found a black (yeah, still not BRG) '06 XK8 (not XKR but I preferred that) in Portland and bought it instead. More miles, less pristine, but also $10K less.
I see that you are in Santa Cruz. I am in Redwood Valley. Perhaps we'll cross paths at some Bay Area cars & coffee thing or some drive around Napa Valley.

Well, he took really good care of it -- I'm loving driving it! I'm 5'11" so no issue fitting; Bob did tell me about his "discomfort" being a factor in deciding to sell. Only one minor issue so far (which I understand is common): the headliner fabric is detaching in some places due to deterioration of foam rubber backing. At some point, I guess I'll spring for the $500 or so to get that fixed.

Not sure about collecting kudos on this particular subject, but the answer is 74. Many years of tinkering culminated in the purchase of an MGA in 1990 and a 5 years resto, followed by 20 odd years of upgrades and preventive maintenance, eventually led to "Damn, this is getting hard work". Still have the MG, but bought the newer XK for my 'retirement years'. Brake job I knew about, ditto headlining cloth, window drop switch and leaking engine oil cooler I did not. Mind you, she's a beauty!

Picks and pans
I hope you will benefit from a read of my pan / filter / connector / sleeve episode of a month or so ago, Kenatofc. Particularly from the viewpoint of those of us who have lost the appetite for laying on floors for hours due to the passing of years. My 2005 photo is attached:

29, a few days away from 30. Got interested in the XK8 when I was given a Maisto model of it as a kid in 1996, it was my favourite model car at the time but I never imagined I'd be able to get the real thing, especially since there were only two convertibles that ever arrived to my country. Well as things turned out, 16 years later I did snag one of those two and I still can't believe my luck two years on.
The model was originally green with a green interior, got it repainted by a custom modelmaker to closer match the 1:1 version.
