XK Owner, What Is Your Age?
#122
The stats are only part of the story. You blokes who live in the USA e.g. don't freakin' know how your bread is buttered. I "die" from the waist down when I read of guys buying XK8s for less than $10K. In Australia, the land of high import duties, "prestige car taxes" etc etc a new XK8 will start at $200K plus.
I bought my car on ebay as a writeoff wreck (AUD$12K) then I invested (?? )
over AUD$50K fixing the car. And that is with mates in "the trade". So...some of you ...count your blessings or the seagulls WILL spot your duco !!

Just kidding. Being in the aviation business I have had the pleasure of working with some of your country men and really enjoyed their beautiful language. It was an interesting contrast with the Texas slang that I had at that time. I have the utmost respect for Australia and would love to visit sometime. And would if it wasn't on the other side of the world.
Have a great time with your XK8. It is a fun experience. Even fixing things is fun because you get to make contact with all the great guys and gals on this forum.

Peter, now I even know more how fortunate we are. I am surprised to hear that about Australia. Really bad for any car enthusiast!. My god! I am born and raised in Germany and I thought it was bad there.
Stats: bought my 2003 XK8, 70k mls for $US 16k. That was 2 years ago and I was 45 at that time.
Bought my 1997 XK8, 92k mls for $US 11k, that was 5 years ago and I was 42 then. (Engine tied, timing chain dilemma)
I bought a 2011 XJL SC for $ 93k about 6 months ago but also found out that the same car would cost me in Germany a wopping EU 144,000. Can only imagine what that would cost where you are.
And I believe that used XK are completely under valued here. And that is a good thing. Lot of people don't know who much style and enjoyment they are missing. Its a bargain here. I am certain you can appreciate that judging how much efforts and money it took you to get your XK. All the best.

People my age give me crap for liking cars driven typically by the liverspot crowd. At 18, I had a toy Corvette Convertible, a BMW 7-Series at 22, and a Jaguar XKR Vert at 23. I still have the Vette, 7 and XKR and I am going to add either a BMW 850i or a r129 Mercedes SL5/600 at my now 24yo age.
Most of my friends my age that care about cars are usually into stuff like WRXs, Evos, F-Bodies, W-Bodies, Mustangs(Fox Body and newer), and trucks(Chevy, Dodge and Ford, no foreign). I'm into high end imported GT cars, so I'm the oddball out.

You are not the only one. I drove "atypical" for my age as well. While I was 18 to 22 mostly older 7series BMW or older S-Class Merc. While my friends where hopping around in Volkswagen Golfs and Ford Fiestas, may be even a Ford Capri (German classic now).
At 23 I chose a new BMW 730i and at 26 I got myself what I considered than the top of the crop. A 1988 BMW750i. After that (now in the US at 29) I got myself a 560 SEL. So you see, very atypical for my age and I never cared what anybody thought.
Sliped up with a new Cadillac STS in 96 (I did not like at all) and continued with a new 1998 XJ8 Vanden Plas which I owned longer then any other car. Also atypical at the age of 34.
I guess by the age of 42 I started getting a bit "sporty" with a 2005 Mercedes CLS500 and then a 2007 CLS63. At the same time I added a couple of souped up Porsche Boxsters as my "second toy convertible" car. (which I LOVED but almost cost me my license).
Got that out of my system and I am enjoying XK8 every since 2006. Having my second and I simply enjoy it.
And of course I got my more age approbriate 2011 XJL SC. At 47 I believe about in the target group Jaguar is aiming for.
I a nutshell: I never felt Jaguar is for the more "aged". In my personal few the styling was always aimed towards "class and style" not the more matured. Its always those assuming that the younger age group can't appreciate class and style. That is non-sense. We are just not those running after every trend like those youngster now all chasing Lexus iS330, Mitsubishi Evo and other noisy items which sound like a coffee grinder on steroids and drive like rock hard go carts. Is it about "getting the girl"? Again, standing out of the crowd with a stylish Jaguar will only hurt in the crowd of rice burning coffee makers. (sorry I don't mean to offend the little sporty Evos, Golfs, BMW3 and so on. I have been told they are all great handling fast cars and I believe it. Just not my cup of tea. So no offense to any owners of such little go cart rockets.)

When I got my Corvette and my Jaguar, they universally panned them as dirty old man cars. One girl I dated didn't know I had my cars until date 3 (drove my Dodge Neon the first 2 dates), and she said she never would've thought I was someone to own cars like "that". She thought I blew all my money on cars, when in reality, all were purchased used at very good prices(most I've ever paid for a car is $11k). I max out my 401k and Roth IRA before I spend anything on cars(which I do cash because I hate long term financial commitments when avoidable).
I like your taste in cars (being it's the same as mine lol). It's a shame most people don't experience nice luxury cars until they're old, isn't it?

What a nice turnout, hopefully it keeps rolling!
Currently the average age is 53.56 (4553 total years) / (85 entries)
Glad to see that people have many interests in common (besides XK’s)
And also sorry about not adding a poll?? It sounds like a great idea, but I didn’t really think of it.
Happy XK,ing

Its so good being younger than average!
As for prices in the UK there is a new special edition XK £60k for coupe £66k for conv
The Jaguar XK Special Edition From £59,900 On The Road
what does that mean:
In Oz $92000 and $101500 (cant believe the exchange rate, 1.5 to pound 3 years ago it was 2)
In US $97368 and $107104
Second hand prices in US also a lot cheaper £15-18k in Uk ($24-S29)will buy you a 2002/3 XKR conv.
How does this compare?

44, and had this car for about a year and a half.
This is an interesting poll, since Jaguar is doing whatever it can to try to rope in a younger crowd. For better or worse, XK8s and XKRs, especially the convertibles, are/were usually bought by fifty-plus empty nesters who didn't care much about performance and knew little about cars, at least that's the case in the USA. Because of this and other factors, I went with a coupe - which is somewhat less of an old man's car (sorry guys...!).
A similar set of circumstances surrounded the Harley I used to have. Liked the bike well enough, but hated the image that went along with it - I was lumped in with a bunch of fat, retired semi-retarded Santa Claus look alikes pretending it's still 1969. Give me a break! When I saw the Viagra table set up at bike week in Laconia NH in 2006 and noticed the only attractive women were the ones paid to be there, I knew it was high time to ditch the old man's bike and pick up a Ducati. I did and never looked back. Much more fun and far fewer image problems (sorry again, to all those offended!). Suffice it to say, the chicks dig the Duc and the coupe.
And yes, the very young guys out there are perfectly within their rights to have at it with the Evos and WRXs for a while. But one day they will reach a certain age when it's time to put the big boy suit on. At that point one must realize a car should be age appropriate without being a blue-haired special.

um let me see, yep 62 this year
introduced to Jags when my college roommate decided to rebuild the engine from his saloon in our front room in 1972
My first british car was a 1960 MGA, friend had an AC with a Jag 6 in it (just a little heavy in the front end).
I am more of a Porsche guy, 1992 911 and 2008 Cayman S, but we when we went looking for a second car for me (before the Cayman) we happened to stop by a Jaguar dealer and she saw the 2000 XK8 and said how about one of those.
Whoa, I had tried to get a 67 XKE back in 89, but she did not like it. This one she likes. We use the XK8 for our weekend escapes to Monterey. The 911 is my daily driver and the Cayman is one day a week.

It's OK gears. People who buy Toyotas don't really want to know about their cars anyway !! That's not to say that the Toyo boys don't know their stuff. Just the cars (and the customers) are boooring. Having said that I have a Nissan Navara dualcab ute that is just a totally reliable workhorse of a vehicle and I love it. It keeps the Jag's going !!!
