XK8 05 Reverse sensor problem

XK8 05 Reverse sensor problem
I could do with a clue where to start looking with this one please.
When I start the car in Park I get a steady tone from the reverse sounder for a few seconds then it goes off.
Selecting reverse I get nothing at all, no proximity indication whatsoever.
Do I check the J-Gate selector, the sensors or the sensor module (which I have yet to locate)
It did start working for one journey then went off again.
My steering column position module also seems to "forget" to lower the wheel when left overnight too.
Do I have a common fault, such as a poor earth or battery perhaps?
Any help would be much appreciated.
Regards

The reversing aid is wired to the LH tail light assembly and not directly to the J gate.
You can download the full Installation Document from my MediaFire account using the following link:
XK Series - Reversing Aid.pdf
This will tell you more than you ever want to know about the Reversing Aid!
Determine whether you have a reversing aid problem or a J gate problem by checking whether the reversing lights are also working intermittently.
If the reversing lights are working properly when reverse gear is selected, the fault must be with the reversing aid. This could be the control module bolted to the left hand rear corner of the boot or any of the harness connections to it.
If the reversing lights are also affected, it's likely to be the transmission control switch on the side of the J gate.

Despite feeling you're almost certainly taking the p**s, here goes -
Depending on the type of speaker fitted in the rear of the console (some have a series of round holes and others a slot to let the sound out), stick something like a band aid or piece of electrical tape over some or even all of the holes to muffle the sound to the desired volume.
Now it's my turn. In the style of an unofficial TSB:
Jaguar XK Series - Reversing Aid Speaker.pdf
The larger blanking strip 'B' should be applied to the face of Speaker 'A' for use with the standard sound system.
Item 'C' is designed for use with the HK premium sound system to provide a more balanced reduction.
