Smile Rog, the Muffler Man!

Rog, Since the XK8 Is a 98 Model, my first question is what condition is you current system in Today? Has the Silencer deteriorated, what about the Pipes and the Mufflers. In other words, do you need to replace the entire system or just replace the noise makers?
Give us something to go on, and we'll help you....

Default straight pipes

I just replaced the two rear stock mufflers on my XK8 with straight pipes. It was less money than the Adamesh pipes. The sound is nice and subtle. I can hear it as I accelerate and its quiet at idle. The only criticism I have is it feels like the car has lost some back pressure and therefore some torque. You many want to consider this when changing out the stock exhaust.

Remove the front mufflers and replace with H pipe. You'll be happy.

Sorry I don't. Did it on a 01 XKR. My muffler shop removed the mufflers which are clamped on and fabricated pipes to replace them, again clamped on. I did not do the H cross pipe but have learned thru the forum that it wll enhance performance. If you don't like the sound origional system can be easily restored. You can't get a lot of sound out of these cars as the convertors quiet the exhaust a lot. Very cheap and almost perfect.

I to have a hard time finding old posts. I believe the H or X pipes smooth out exhaust pulses and susposedly increase performance. However true dual exhaust sound will probably be lost. These are small displacement high geared cars. Don't expect old time muscle car sound.

Question RogPerez & Tom Terrific the X&H pipe men!

Hey Guys!

That little 4 liter and the Bigger 4.2 liter Engines are both smaller than the first Chevvy V8...It had 265ci in 1955....My 4.2 liter only has 256ci today....There is some Sound in there but and X or H Pipe is not going to help or hurt either the sound or the HP! The cheapest way to make noise with your set-up is to remove the Rear Mufflers and replace with straight Pipes...............

I have been thinking about replacing mine also. A lot of the custom exhausts are a grand or more. So....I have been thinking old school or even retro. Back in the days of good ole hot rods we used Cherry Bombs. Going to replace the front two with one of the new Cherry Bombs and eliminate the back two.

Unfortunately it will be a couple of months before I can get to it. Leaving the country for a couple of months at the end of this month. I plan on ordering one today so I can tackle it when I get back. Will post the results.

Cool MiragePro & Popeye68 and Retro Mufflers....

You young Men were talking Retro and Old School and reminded me of my first Corvette back in 1953.....It had a Chevy 6 with Power-glide and a split Exhaust Manifold and triple Side-Draft Carbs......It didn't make much noise, so I got a couple "Smithy" Mufflers and replaced the Stock ones.....I still remember how great it sounded! If you remember the old B-36 Bomber with the 6 big Pusher Motors....It had a fantastic roar and you could hear it coming and it just covered you with that beautiful sound.....that's the way the 53 sounded.....a mild and beautiful roar!

We used Cherry Bombs mostly on Ford V8's...back then......They sounded good on both the Flat-Head and OHV Engines that came out in 1954.....

Sorry! I guess I got a little to Retro!!!

This young man used the bombs on his first car, Buick convertible in 64 and a few others later on. The later became out of fashion, but in the last few years made a comeback. Lots of interesting videos on YouTube about them.
