since so many people were so gracious to respond to my inquiry, i thought that i should post an update of my own. I went ahaed and removed the front muffler and had straight pipes installed to the next mufflers in line on the way to the back of the car. The sound was dramatically enhanced, but in a subtle way. I generally like it but i also did not get any kind of european car sound. It sounds very much like an american block engine. i hope that this helps.

Hey guys, I ordered the Mina muffler delete kit for my 98 XK8 - after waiting for several weeks with no kit I called them to be informed that they were having fitment issues and weren't able to provide me the pipes. I canceled that order and went to Adamesh for the similar kit they offer for actually a bit less (bit over $300 with shipping). I ordered it on a Tuesday, it was shipped from the UK on Friday and I got it the following Monday! This is the kit that replaces the rear mufflers with straight pipes and very nice oval tips. I installed it the other day and what a difference! Very nice and classy deep growl from my cat now as opposed to the almost-electric car sound that it had before. I figured why have a 300-horse V8 with 5 mufflers that almost sounds like a Tesla when you can get the nice growl I have now for a few hundred bucks? I love the sound and I drive around with the windows down to get the full enjoyment. I'm tempted to get the Adamesh over the axle upgrade now but I'm worried it may sound a bit too over the top for a Jag - anybody have experience with that upgrade?
