Before my Jag got 3 years of rest due to overheating issue on occasion it would just stall out while I was driving normally. I called a former Jag mechanic who was working on his own and he seemed to know exactly what was wrong and the fix. I have not yet put the car in road worthy condition but before I start to drive it on a regular basis I wanted to post this to see if anyone had useful input into that problem.

I don't know how to read the OBDII codes. Can you explain?

 

I am not sure what you mean by DTC's. A mechanic recently did work installing radiator and water pump. He was not a Jag guy but he said he ran an computer on it and found nothing. Also, I don' know what you mean by throttle body action. My intro thread explains that the car "set up" for a few years.

On early XK8s, there was a problem with some Throttle Bodies - which Motorcarman was referring to - addressed by Jaguar in a "Service Action". Do a search on Jaguar SA S514 and you'll easily find it.
If it looks like the same as your symptoms, and your VIN number falls into the stated range, then it would be worth getting the work done. The bad news - Jaguar will no longer do this for free. The good news - early throttle bodies are available at reasonable cost as long as you get one with an "EK" suffix as these were supplied to Jaguar dealers to address this problem.
Otherwise, providing your throttle body doesn't have the "Do Not Clean" label, it's a fairly easy job to give it a good clean with the right stuff which might well solve the problem at virtually no cost.

 

Take your car to AutoZone, Advance Auto or Sears and ask them to read the OBDII codes. When they do jot the codes down and post the codes. They may tell you what they mean but the meaning differs from car to car so just give us the codes.

 

I found the message below during a search. My vin is SAJGX5749VC013191 so I should fall into the reprogram ECM category. What does that entail. Thanks for all the great help.

Here is a list of the vehicle's that SA 514 cover's and the repair that's required for them. This is, or should be, a no charge repair, mine was and I'm the second owner, purchasing the car in late 2004.

Free service. Hopefully (for them) they will sell you some parts because of it. But, as Gus said, post the codes here after saying thank you. What did the former Jag mechanic tell you? As Bob says, this is a known issue and can be fixed.

 

Jaguar engineers came up with a software 'upgrade' to try to prevent the throttle stalling issue. Some ECMs could not be 'reprogrammed' so a new throttle needed to be fitted to prevent stalling.

That is why some VIN ranges had throttles and some simply had the ECMs 'flash-programmed' or 'reflashed'.

During the campaign I was told by Jaguar Tech Help Line that the throttle stop was adjusted on the replacement to prevent the blade from fully closing causing a high vacuum situation but was advised NOT to try to duplicate the procedure due to liability issues.

I guess a competent mechanic could adjust the throttle stop a little at a time instead of replacing a mostly functioning throttle assy.

I might even have a box of old throttles somewhere for experimentation someday. I'll report if I ever try it.

As far as I recall he mentioned some type of part that had been identified and it was expensive to replace at a dealership but he could get the part and replace it for much less. I am getting more info from this forum than I got from him. TY

 

I never heard of a Throttle Body till now. A quick search shows that they can be purchased for less than $100.00.


I have to tackle first things first, however, since my Jag was left for dead for a few years. It does not seem that the throttle body would affect the starting. For the most part the car starts ok but there has been a few time that it would not start. Most of the 4 yr old fuel is gone now so that may help. Also, an oil change with Restore may help. I really don't like to have even the hint of a starting problem but maybe I will have to live with it. I will get those codes soon and post. Love this forum!

Not yet. I'll take it somewhere to have that done or learn to do it myself if no special equip is required.
