Cutting off JUST the middle big muff won't throw codes as these cars seem to be tempermental if you f with them from orig config!?!?!?!?
Actually there are the two cats, then the center muffler, then two mufflers in front of the rear axle and two mufflers behind the read axle. Total: Five mufflers plus two cats.

No resonators then. This set up is insanely silly it seems to me.

I should F with the wife, she drives it the most, have straight pipes run after cats, sneek it home, let her fire it up for work and poop in her pants.

I had the center muffler removed and an X pipe put in its place. I was disappointed with the difference. I could barely notice a change. Now I'm thinking about having either the mufflers in front of the axle or in back of the axle replaced. I think two of the mufflers are really just glass packs, but I'm not sure which two. I'd like to remove those and leave the mufflers in place. If that's not noisy enough for me then I'll have the glass packs reinstalled and the mufflers removed.

The owner of this site needs update to Vbulletin 3.8.x so they can load the LIVE TOPIC feature which would allow anyone in a topic (thread ) that is hot (many posts at a time) like were were doing, the posts would appear in real time instead of us having to click refresh of our browsers to see new posts. I use it on my yesfans.com site and it is a nice feature.

I've seen that before. It's a nice feature, but I don't usually see threads updated frequently enough on jag forums for it to be really useful. But if it doesn't cost anything, then yeah, they should upgrade.

It would have came in handy in this thread tonight but yea in our little world here for XK8 it would not be seen/used much.

Wow, really? Just replacing my center muffler with straight pipes and having a H pipe added right behind the back of the transmission pan has added quite a bit of volume for me. At anything more than a low acceleration take off, it's quite noticeable for me. At about 2500 under medium acceleration it's really noticeable. Under full acceleration it's pretty loud. In an underpass/tunnel it's easily 2-3x louder under acceleration. At speed she's quiet unless I give it some decent throttle.

I'm running the two rear mufflers and the resonators. I wonder if the type and placement of the crossover is playing any significant role here.

Its been awhile since anyone has added a video and sound to this thread. Where's the new vids from the latest modded exhausts? I'd like to hear some more!

Please note what you did (straight pipes, x-pipe, h-pipe, resonator delete, etc) if you post one up.

Interesting thread Gents...now that I'm getting past the initial straightening out of my "new" Cat's problems my thoughts are turning to induction and exhaust upgrade mods. Is the wisdom of the group to go with true duals here or an "X" pipe setup?

Thanks,
Tom

I think that most of us the have done a modification noticed that a true duel system results in a very raspy and popping sound.

a dual system with no crossover on a V8, is kind of like two four cylinder engines running at a very low idle I don't believe that I've ever heard anyone, in any application, claim that it produces an exhaust sound preferable to one with a crossover.

Ohio XK has got it. When I removed the centre muffler on my R, I tried going with no crossover. Baaaad. Sounds like some cylinders are missing from the driver's seat. I put a short H crossover and cured it. Still idled nice with a tiny bit more rumble but when you stood on it, it howled. Now with the XK8, I'm going to take XKRacer's advice and dump the two mufflers in front of the axel but leave the centre and the two resonaters at the back.

I went without the crossover on my XKR and it sounds fine. Nothing noticeable when cruising or backing off, when you don't want the sound when late or cops are around, but a nice mellow roar when it comes on the powerband mid 2000s. Idle may be a tad rough, maybe not.

I only replaced my two end mufflers with straight pipes which gives me a nice rumble and not too loud.

I noticed nobody else has this setup.

I'm now tempted to change the centre muffler out with an X-pipe.
Any comments?

I've done the same mod to my XKR that I did to my KX8. I took out the center muffler and added a H crossover. It's mellow at normal acceleration or cruising speed but it's much louder than the XK8 at hard acceleration. I'm not sure I like it and am regretting not keeping the center muffler to reinstall so I can try removing the others. Oh well. It doesn't sound bad, it's just really loud when you're mashing the pedal to the floor.
