I have done a little research on this and, you can order a fob (ebay) and program it yourself.

The key, however, is a totally different story. Must be programmed by the dealer. My dealer wanted over $250 for the key and programming. I have heard of others getting a key from their dealers for as little as $100.

Guess my advice is call your dealer and see how much he charges. But, buy your fob off of ebay and program it yourself.

Good Luck

Darrell

I got a fob from ebay and the key from a mobile "Auto Key Cutting" franchise in the UK, for £70. If they do this in the UK it must be available in the US.

I just went through the key replacement thing also. The locksmith actually was a lot more money than the dealer. Alpine in Fort Lauderdale wants 87 for each key and 140 to program. However, depends on the year of your car. 1997 to 1999 are cut keys from the dealer, no programming required, 2000 and up must be programmed. If you buy two keys they only charge once for the programming. Start the search, they must be somewhere.

First off, you will need physical access. You will need to somehow have a tibbe 8-cut key made (easy, there are several options), but you will need either some code (dealer?) or a good quality picture of the old key. This will let you operate all the locks, including ignition, but not start the car (unless the car is US '97). The option of last resort is to somehow gain access to the trunk and CAREFULLY disassemble the lock. The specific sequence of angles for each disk/washer in the stack is the key "code". New trunk locks come with a one-pager description on how this works...

To start the car, you will need a crypto chip and pair it. Chips are cheap (megamos 13 for 2000 and before, megamos 48 for 2001 and later, check eBay). This chip would likely be embedded in a key bought from the dealer. Programming is a diagnostics port procedure. Some handheld devices claim to be able to do this (Foxwell NT510), or the full "dealer" SDD/IDS. This takes a few min. There is no add function, all keys have to be re-programmed at once.

For the fob, the cutoff is 2001 again. Before 2001, you are stuck with somewhat pricey used fobs on eBay I believe. For 2001 forward, they are "ford-compatible" and there are more and cheaper options. These can be programmed with no tools, it is just a sequence of steps (ignition on, flash the headlights, etc.). Check the stickies.

Best of luck, keep us posted.
