XK8 Instrument Cluster faults
Hello all,
As I am new to this site just want introduce my self as Bob from South Carolina. I Recently purchased 2000 XK8 coupe with 52k original miles from a donation auction (site unseen). The car is beautiful runs great Black on Black. Don't know very much about these cars, previously owned a 1973 XJ6.
Now for the good stuff! check engine light on abs on, brake light on, all gauges inop, warnings are incorrect part fitted, ASC not available, gear box fault, low brake fluid, When I turn on the ignition I get an error on climate control followed by 10 beeps, then it works. Finally codes P1638 & P1000. Cleared P1638 never came back, still same issues. Did the hard reboot thing with the battery and it is fully charged at 12.5V. So I sent the instrument cluster to Circuit Solution's in ID, they tested said communication was work on the can network, did some soldering, cleaning etc.
Now I reinstalled and it does the same thing??
Every once in a while it all clears for a second or too and then returns to the original faults mentioned above. Any body have any suggestions? I've cleaned and checked the right rear wheel sensor so far, checked all fuses. Found one blown 20amp in the passengers side dash fuse box don't know what it was for, it was half way down the panel.
Thanks in advance,
Bob

Does the fuel gauge work?
Reason I ask is that the fuel gauge is an analog type direct form the sender but all the rest are communication from the ECU. If it is these communication type that don't work then you most likely have some issue with the CAN bus on the car, which is also consistent with the P1638 code.
The instrument cluster acts as a sort of bridge between the different networks In the car so all manner of strange, seemingly unrelated things may happen when there is a communication fault.
Unfortunately this kind of fault will be difficult (and potentially expensive) to diagnose with the guess and check method of replacing parts.
Really the best option is to find someone with the dealer level of scan tool that can talk to all of the various modules to help point you in the right direction.

The instrument cluster should also be checked for this known fault: http://jagrepair.com/images/TSB/XK8/...%20failure.pdf
Also check the connectors for bent pins (disconnect battery first).

I performed DOZENS of SERVICE ACTION S484 back in the early 2000s.
Once the solder migrates and shorts between circuits, it's sometimes TOO LATE to clean the solder and return the INSTPK to service. (damage done)
You can grind away the plastic ridge in the INSTPK backing plate to duplicate the updated 'M' version. You will probably need a replacement cluster. Make sure the replacement has the 'M' or at least follow the S484 instructions.

Welcome to the forums, you'll find a host of information and a bunch of folks who really help each other out. You have one or more problems likely, depends on how long the car sat and where, what was wrong with PO and maybe why it was donation but regardless, here's a list of ground points, you should check these to ensure all your grounds are clean and tight. Probably not the problem but very Cheap.. a rarity with our jags.

Here's a listing made by a member here, sorry forget who but he gets the credit for this not me, I'm just passing it along, 02 isn't much diff than yours I believe they are the same.
btw: when you gt a min update your profile 'signature' with Year/Make so we'll know in your posts what MY your car is (I looked at top entry but in future posts it's good to know, you'll see most folks have this. Good Luck.

XK8 Instrument Cluster faults
Thanks all for the information, but I'm ready to pull my hair out (what I have left) trying to figure out this CAN communication error with the instrument cluster. I assume the cluster is good as I sent it out and it bench tested good tried all the other information I can see on this board. It looks like I will have to take it somewhere to diagnose.

Due to all of the electronic systems in these cars, they can be pretty hard on batteries. If you research the forum, you'll find literally dozens of different problems caused by a questionable battery. The fact that the battery was "dry", so to speak, and you had to re-fill it, is worrisome. If the electrolyte drops well below the top of the plates, and depending on conditions (temperature, charging rate, etc.), it's overall life can be significantly shortened. You'd be well-advised to have it tested; of all the components you're looking at potentially replacing, the battery is probably the cheapest.
