Seems like a lot of money. lt has low miles, but that paint says probably been sitting outside in the same place for a very long time.

I posted some questions. It also has a restricted performance code up. This could be a number of things, MAF, plugs, coil packs, etc.

Greater concern is proof the primary and secondary timing chains, guides and tensioners.

When I was looking at XK8s I wouldn't consider anything pre '05. The seller of an earlier model would have to have extensive service records. I still see a lot of pre 2000 models wih low miles available on Craig's List. I'm not currently looking, the pandemic has affected my financial situation enough that I'm just staying with what I have.

reading the comments, doesn't sound like tensioners have been touched.

It would be helpful if you could list the details, miles, year, etc. for those of us who can't get to Facebook.

Default Tensioners vs Oil Change, You make the call

I think on purpose. Seller proposes that replacing the tensioners is unnecessary, see below.

For those without facebook (I had to borrow from wife). Paint appears to be more than a 'buff out' over the entire body, see below. Has at least one issue (tensioners) that is arguably worth a fair amount in either time or money. I think it's worth far less than the owner wishes even before the rest of the issues are identified.

From ad
"Jaguar xk8 convertible $5,900 may consider offer it only has 68,000 original miles I've had the car for 12 years it's pretty clean not used during the winter time tires pernelli cost over $1,700 from tire rack no rust pretty original car if you see the ad it's still available so you don't need to push if it's available you can see it in Quincy Illinois as you know this car is sold for over $75,500 new so you can buy this for $5,900 maybe even consider offer please only serious inquiries only if you are a serious buyer you can do your research on Facebook there's quite a few xka Jaguar sites that you can join and find out the value so you don't waste my time if you're not a real buyer I don't have much time left and I want to thank the administrator for letting me run this ad on your site I'm pushed to sell this xk8 Jaguar this is the real deal you can call me anytime I'm retired XXX-XXXX-XXXX, if you like this ad or the car please give me the like sign thank you."

Don't worry, it will buff out.

First, it obviously needs total paint or he would have washed it clean for pics, or if that is "clean", the paint is worse than suspected.

Second, his comments that these engines do not need CCTs changed if you keep the oil clean is pure BS! That comment disqualifies this car for sale at any price.

To the owner: PLASTIC deteriorates no matter what oil you use. PLASTIC CCTs, especially!

The AJ-V8 is NOT a Ford 4.0. If the primary and secondary timing chains, guides and tensioners have not been replaced, the engine is subject to catastrophic failure at any moment.

Anyone considering buying the car should adjust their offer accordingly.

I bought a 2000 XK8 coupe 2/3 years ago for $ 5,000.00. It was pretty much immaculate and had not seen rain for ten years. Not due to being in storage but that the owner only drove it on dry weekends. I was assured the tensioners had been changed. I will be checking that. I have had the throttle body rebuilt, replaced the cup holder, front springs and shocks, and rear view mirror, I am doing some paint touchup. I plan to sell it in the spring after totally sorting it out and putting a little over 10,000 miles on it. I recently bought a very, very nice 01 XKR convertible. I hope to get 10K for the XK8. To get the car listed to the place mine is would cost at least $ 7,000.00 to $ 10,000.00 if you have someone else do the work. The paint job alone would start at $ 3,000.00 and go up depending on numerous things.

I have bought and sold about 15 Jaguar Xk8 and XKR from craiglist and eBay. I would not pay more than $1000 for this car. The amount of work involved is significant and I do all the work myself.

I agree.
It seems to me that the seller, or someone, didn't care for this car as we care for ours but still wants decent money. At this point the original purchase price is irrelevant but he mentions it anyway. He seems to be targeting a buyer who doesn't know much about these cars.
The car just doesn't present well and he's going to have a hard time getting the money he wants.
Once you factor in the value of a car like this in good condition and add the cost of getting it there, with the timing chains and tensioners, a paint job, and who knows what else, the value of this car isn't much. Maybe better to part it out.

I was just looking at a very nice 1998 XK8 Convertible on BAT. All maintenance has been done including tensioners and guides. It is currently bid to $ 5,800.00 in a no reserve auction with 7 1/2 hours left to go. My guess is that it will end up selling in the $ 7,000.00 range. The car seems to need little if anything. I posted earlier about the cost to get the above listed car into peak condition and I now think that it could and probably is more valuable as a parts car. The alternative is that someone buys it for 1 or 2 K and does a restoration themselves for around $7,000.00 and has a really nice and well sorted personal XK8. Then again you can buy a well sorted one on BAT for the same cost. It all depends what you choose and who you are. Some of us just like the challenge and the saving of a car but we don't want to or like loosing money..

The XK8 currently on BAT looks pretty nice. Most of the usual items of concern are already addressed. Even if it gets to 8K it's still a bargain compared to the one in the original post.

The 98 XK8 on BAT sold for $ 7,600.00. This puts a starting point out there for the XK8 in this string of posts. Figuring that S & H would be $ 1,000.00 for the most part, only someone doing the work themselves would buy this as a project. I think the car is best suited as a parts car otherwise. Apparently the motors are in high demand.
