Does anyone know where the Bonnet switch is located?

I have a constant warning on the trip computer "Bonnet Open" when ever the ignition is on.

Open and shut your bonnet again.

Now, is it 'hood' or 'bonnet', because if its hood, then it is referring to the convertible top not completely latched.

If its 'bonnet', well...the front panel that covers the engine. lol, hard to describe.

Boot open, that's the trunk...rear compartment.

check them all, and report back. Bonnet switches do not often fail around here at least.

If the message says that your "hood" is open, that's means the convertible top. In the owner's manual you will see instructions on how to latch it. You have to get the hex key out of the trunk, stick it in a hole near the rear-view mirror, and tighten it down.

If the message says "bonnet", that means your engine bay cover is open. I don't know how to fix that.

Hood = convertible cloth top over the passenger compartment.
Bonnet = engine bay access on the front of the car.
Boot = luggage compartment at the rear of the car.

this really confused me one day. I opened and shut my hood several times, until I realized that hood is conv top in British. You'd think they could have easily reprogrammed that for the American market.

The switch you are looking for is at the base of the right hand hood(US ) or bonnet(UK) latch.
Could be adjustment or it could have failed. You could try pressing down on the right rear corner of the hood while someone watches the light. Don't know if the switch is available separate from the latch.

English nomenclature is confusing: MY MG-TC says to clean the air filter in paraffin and has a draught excluder at the base of the windscreen

^ I did the same thing Dan...once. Felt like a doofus after I figured it out. I kept saying 'damnit, my hood IS shut'.

I've been reading this thread - and it just didn't sound right to my expereince - so I went out and checked mine (2002 XKR).

When the trunk is open, the warning panel says "trunk open". When the top isn't latched, it says "top not latched". and when the hood (covering the engine) is open, it says nothing - blank screen.

Go figure - perhaps they decided that us yanks would never learn English. Or perhaps they knew that someday a person from Texas would own the car and that we need specific direction (sorry Matt!). DaleD

Dale, don't you have your logic mixed up a bit? If we (me and Dan, amongst others) have cars that actually say boot, bonnet, and hood...and yours doesn't...isn't that a reflection on who needs the more 'simpler' terms to understand.

Granted, I didn't catch on that quick, but at least my car gave me a chance. Just sayin... my car is more British than yours.

Some where along the line they changed the messages. Mine ,an '04, tells me Hood, Trunk or Top. It's their language, we just perfected it...

I'm fascinated with the thought that somewhere back in the 2000 - 2004 MYs, someone at the factory knew where each car was headed (UK, US, CAN, etc) and either installed, or took the time to program, the correct lingo into such details as the displays. If that was the case, indeed mine is less British than Matt's, but what else might be different? Less metric fittings?

Take that thought one step farther and think about one headed to Texas - "Let's have the Nav lady say 'Howdy Pardner - Let's saddle up and mosey on over to...'" - I love it! Unfortunately that is probably what they think of us from Texas... DaleD
