Default XKR Coupe Door trim + s/s split-rims

Hi,

Newbie here and it wouldn't be right if my first post was not a cry for help !

just bought an '04 XKR and loving it but got a couple of little issues to deal with before it's 'perfick' .

Looking for advice/suggestions.

1. 3 of my s/s split-rims have taken a few bashes/nicks. Are they repairable with some tlc or am I better just digging into my pockets for some new ones (price/location ?)

2. The door trim above the door-glass (ie the section that the glass retracts from /returns to) is showing some distress signs (non-jag dealer suggested it was caused by oxidisation(?) ) and my independent mechanic reckons it'san easy job once I get the parts . Again , any ideas or is it back to Jag ?

Thanks in advance.

YOU DONT EVEN WANT TO KNOW THE PRICE OF THOSE BBS, YOU CAN DO 2 THINGS, SEND THE RIMS TO BBS TO REPLACE THE STAINLESS RINGS, OR WHAT WE DO IS HAVE THE WHEEL REPAIR GUYS REMOVE THE RINGS AND EITHER PAINT THE LIP SILVER LIKE TO CENTERS OR POLISH THEM AND CLEAR COAT.
DONT KNOW EXACTLY WHAT YOURE REFFERING TO ON THE DOOR/WINDOW TRIM...PICS?

cheers,

I've seen the rims for about £100+vat each but I know the wheels have to be split to remove/fit them.

I'll post a photo of the damaged door trim later. it's basically the black trim, about 5mm wide that receives the window glass .

Welcome aboard from another relative noobie. Re: the wheels. I suspect it would be cheaper to try and find a used replacement rather than trying to do a 'by-the-book' formal repair by BBS. Alternatively, you can sometimes find these specialized small vendors (similar to the dent-wizard guys) that can repair minor blemishes on site. I came across a guy recently doing wheel touch-ups at an exotic car dealership near my work. This guy was able to work magic on some badly scuffed wheels so that they ended up looking new again. Perhaps there are similar services in your area?

Is the door trim you are speaking of the black rubber-like thing that sweeps the outside surface of the glass? Is it coming apart or is it just discolored? If the latter, you can probably find something to restore the look or rejuvenate the rubber.

Cheers for that.

That's exactly the piece of trim I'm talking about. It's actually peeling away at the bottom edge(downwhere it meets the front wing)and the metal(?) underneath is beginning to bulge - almost like a piece of cardboard that's absorbed moisture - daft analogy I know , but the best I can think of .

The wheels themselves are relatively ok , it's the split-rim rings (I've got 20" on the car) which have taken a few dents - I actually added another in the snow and ice yesterday.

I guess a picture of the trim would make it more apparent but bulging metal does not sound good and almost sounds like rust intrusion. I also have 20-inch BBS (Montreal) on my car and, luckily, the stainless steel rings are unblemished. So are these rings actually removable from the rest of the wheel? I know that BBS has a website and I called their 800-number here in the States to ask a question once and the guy I spoke with seemed very helpful. I needed one of those screw-in plugs where the removable valve stem goes on these wheels and their direct price was pretty cheap compared with Jaguar.

Cheers Seismicguy.

I think there is some water instrusion although think it may be treatable. It's dark , cold and wet in Glasgow tonight so I'll take some photos tomorrow (weather permitting).

Regarding the wheels. Yes. my understanding is that the wheel can be split to remove the stainless steel rim . My understanding is that it's basically in place to prevent the alloy taking the beating. It's easier to replace a £100 rim than an £600 alloy !!

I found a link to this http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Jaguar-20-BBS-...1%7C240%3A1318so might buy one , replace the least damaged and see if I can tidy that one while it's off the wheel.

I believe the trim piece you're looking for is called the "Waist Seal". I was missing a section on my convertable and found a very reasonably priced used replacement here:

http://www.motorcarsltd.com/salvage.asp

Ask for Ken and say Scott sent you.I think he's on this forum a bit...

Sannabhoy: Sounds like a winner! What does it take to just replace this ring? Are there special tools and know-how involved?

Seismicguy ,

I understand it's a 'specialist' job in the sense that not all tyre centres would be able to do it. I would ask your local if they can handle a split alloy- if they can then they should be able to replace it.

Update for those interested and thanks to Spurlee for his input

1. Stainless Steel rim surrounds are available (especially on ebay) for between £90-120 . The fitting process is a specialist process requiring the wheel to be split to fit the ring.

2. Door Seal. Yes , Spurlee , it's called a waist seal and is available from Jag for £77+vat . It's avery simple process to fit -apparently you can do it with a tea-spoon and a cloth (to protect paintwork - just prise the trim off and press the replacement on.

I'll order and fit in the New Year. And take some photos of process.

Cheers.
