Question XKR Head Liner Fitting Guide

Hi,
My mum has a 2001 XKR and the roof lining was shot to bits. We took out the old roof liner and it fell apart so ordered a GRP replacement.
We're having trouble fitting it back in.
The passenger seat has been removed and the window is down as per any instructions I can find online but the roof just doesn't seem to want to go in the car.
Has anyone fitted one of these and know of a way of getting it in the car? Once it's inside I'm sure it'll be easy to fit up, lol.

Any help appreciated
Rich

I did one just the other day, you do have to get it in a certain way, it will go in but is a tight fit and you need 2 people, one to push and one to guide. I always leave the plastic covering on to avoid getting marks on the material.. I also had the centre console removed to give a bit more space.......

Thanks for the info.
We tried every way we could think to get it in and the new liner isn't very flexible.
We were putting the rear side of the liner in first pointing it towards to floor where the passenger seat fits and then we got the liner stuck on the door and couldn't get it any further.
Is this the right way of getting it in or should we be trying to get the front in first?
Thanks
Rich

Hmmm I am trying to remember how I did it, as you have discovered it is not straight forward......

I seem to think I put it in at 90 degrees, so it needs to be turned around as it goes in, this also needs to be at a 45 degree angle with the edge nearest the windscreen being above the dash. As you slide it in you have to start turning it the correct way around and to be perfectly honest I also had the drivers seat removed as well......

That is the best I can remember, give it a go?

Thanks for the info, I'll give it another try tonight if it doesn't rain

I have found a local company that will fit it for £120 by taking the windscreen out and refitting it so I might get her to just bite the bullet and pay to get it done.

Thanks

You wrote window down.

But did you try it with the door openM

It came out so it should go back in. You have to slightly bend one corner.

You probably don't want to do that...there's a chance they could bend one of the windshield trim pieces while prying them off...and those are expensive bits. You would then be out by more than £120.

We did have the door open and did try bending but due to it being fiberglass we didn't want to bend it to the point of breaking it.
The old roof liner came out in bits.

To be fair the company that I spoke to about doing it are a proper Jaguar independent repair company who have had the car in before for other bits and do a really good job and they said they would get a windscreen specialist in to remove and refit the windscreen so I'm not really concerned too much about bits getting broken. I understand that there's always a possibility of any breakage but the possibility would be much less with them doing it rather than me, lol.

I can't claim to have done this but it looks the kind of job you wouldn't forget in a hurry!

Knowing what needs to be removed and the illustration of the way to manouvre it into the vehicle should help.

The JTIS procedure is:

REMOVAL
1. Remove front seats
2. Remove rear seat cushion and squab
3. Remove battery cover and disconnect earth cable from battery terminal
4. Remove rear quarter casings
5. Remove combined grab handles and coat hanger hooks
6. Remove 'J' gate surround
7. Remove center console
8. Remove 'A' post upper trim panels
9. Remove sun visors
10. Remove sun visor retention bezels
11. Remove roof console
12. Withdraw each door aperture seal from flange upper section
13. Position headlining for access. Easing the body tabs back to release the headlining, progressively move the headlining downwards to access interior light multiplug. Disconnect interior light multiplug and free headlining from remaining body tabs
14. Avoiding damage to fascia, door aperture seals and door casings, lift and turn headlining through 90 degrees, tilt into passenger footwell and remove from vehicle.

XKR Head Liner Fitting Guide-headlining.jpg

INSTALLATION
1. Fit interior light to headlining
2. Place headlining in vehicle tilted to position with one end in footwell and opposite end at top of door aperture
3. Lift and rotate headlining through 90 degrees
4. Position headlining at roof and reposition door aperture seals to retain it.
5. Connect interior light multiplug
6. Fully seat headlining ensuring correct positioning over backlight flange
7. Bend body tabs into position to secure headlining
8. Fit roof console
9. Fit both sun visors
10. Fit 'A' post upper trim panels
11. Fit center console assembly
12. Fit 'J' gate surround
13. Fit combined grab handles and coat hanger hooks
14. Fit rear quarter casings
15. Fit rear seat squab and cushion
16. Connect earth cable to battery terminal and fit battery cover
17. Fit front seats

When I did mine...I went in the passenger side door. Rear went in first towards the drivers side, then got turned towards the rear. While turning, the headliner was bent almost 90 degrees (it never folded or creased). The front end was curved down by the auto-shifter. I recall having to move the shifter to the rear most position so I could get it there. I did this with the OEM headliner redone, and not an aftermarket one. I never removed any seat (both were reclined all the way). In fact, I took off almost no trim...just A pillars and coat hangers. I did a detailed write up on this forum of headliner lessons learned...it was very detailed.

That is an excellent guide, thank you.
We might just be able to do it ourselves now. I'll have a look for a guide to removing the centre console.

Unfortunately the replacement we have isn't an original so doesn't bend at all which is part of the problem, lol

Not to hijack the thread, but...

The PO had the headliner covered with Alcantara and I've never gotten the rear edge of the headliner secured above the rear window. It just sort of hangs there, about 3/4" lower than it would be if it was secure.

Nothing in the JTIS instructions seems to cover this. Is there a trick here? What (where) is the "Backlight Flange"? Is that what I'm looking for.

BTW: I noticed an error in the JTIS installation sequence. If you install the roof console before addressing the sunvisors you will overlook connecting the sunvisor multiplugs. They must be connected, and the sunvisor bezels should be screwed in, before the console is pressed into place.

Thanks - Jim M

A good question, actually. When I removed my headliner a couple of weeks ago, I saw that the previous owner had secured the center rear to the roof with a big piece of velcro they had added themselves...AND...wait for it...household caulk.

They had made quite a mess with it. I won't be trying that method when I re-install. Sheesh.

There is actually a 3" length of Velcro fitted by Jaguar to hold the back up, no need with the GRP item as it is stiff enough, the issue I found was the headliner hung low by the passengers side opening....... Remember this is a UK car so your drivers
