Hi gang, I tried to pull up the parking brake the other day and felt the cable snap. My cat is from New Jersey and has a bit of rust, so I assume that it's completely snapped.
Has anyone ever replaced the parking brake themselves? How difficult was it to do so? Given that there is rust down there, I'm inclined to swap the entire parking brake assembly, but am not sure how difficult it is to pull off.
The diagram of the general arrangement of the Parking Brake from JTIS helps to understand how the system operates:
There's 3 cables - one to the equaliser (item 6) and 1 each to left and right rear parking brake shoe expanders. Usual issues are the relay lever (item 4) siezes, stretching or snapping the relay to equaliser cable or the expanders shown in rothwell's post #2 sieze.
Easy job to install the rear cables, with access from underneath. Pic of the assembly below with the relay and equalizer marked in the red circle.
