Default XKR - When Did The Timing Chain Guides Go Metal

Good Morning,

I've been researching the threads on this issue, but I can't (unless missing something) find out when the tensioners went from plastic to metal. I will soon be taking my 2002 XKR with a 12/01 build date in to an indy shop to have the rear end leak repaired and would be a good time to have the tensioners done as it is outside of my area of expertise.

Sounds from the threads that if all else fails I could remove a valve cover and look.

Thank you,

Rob

The build date is not relevant. Check the engine serial number. Metal tensioners began in 13 August 2001 with engine number 010813xxxx.

I think I found some information on the number location ; may need to look in a couple of places.

Your engine number (later 4.0 V8) is aft of the left motor mount.

Listen to the experts, but I believe the parts you want are from the later 4.2l engines. The earlier metal tensioners, first generation after the plastic version, have also had issues of reliability.

Best of luck, keep us posted.

The late 4.0 V8 used the 'silent-running-Morse style ' primary chains, sprockets, guides, oil pump etc.(From Engine (0108130000))
The secondary used the roller chains with the aluminum body tensioners.(From Engine (0108130000))

Not sure if this helps anyone but my car (VIN SAJDA41BX2PA25864) has the metal guides. Had my mechanic open the engine to check a couple weeks ago. We have owned the car since new and can confirm that we never replaced the guides.
