Everything was done from above (well, except for mopping up the little PS fluid I didn’t catch). Overall it wasn’t a bad job at all and didn’t take too long.

Update:

Wayne (cjd777) and I are planning to get together at his home shop in Spencer on Tuesday morning, February 20th, to fix the weeping power steering hose issue using the brass barb hose connector method. If you happen to be in the area, feel free to drop in and join us for the festivities. A great BBQ lunch will follow....

Update:

Wayne (cjd777) and I got together at his home shop this morning and did the job using the brass barb connector method as previously described and outlined by chillyphilly. We removed the air filter box but due to the lack of working space down in that area next to the alternator even with the air filter box out of the way, Wayne had a bit of a challenge working his rotary cutter tool down to the lousy plastic-and-crimped-metal factory connector that is the source of the infamous weep, but some new heavy-duty 1-inch diameter cutting wheel blades we picked up at Harbor Freight solved that issue fairly quickly. Wayne cut that lousy factory connector wide open and we saw that there are two O-rings inside it. The weep seems to originate from where these O-rings sit in the plastic end of the factory connector on the steering rack side of it. Getting rid of it completely is definitely the way to go with this repair....

One improvement we decided upon was to go with a new section of 5/16-inch hose instead of a new section of 3/8-inch hose. The new 3/8-inch hose was simply too loose around the metal pipe end that leads to the steering rack - way too much play in it even when pushed all the way down against the flange on the metal pipe end. A couple of clamps may have grabbed it enough to keep it from leaking there but we did not want to run that risk. The new 5/16-inch hose section was a much tighter fit on both the metal pipe end and the 3/8-inch brass barb connector end. I guarantee you that sucker will not leak even a micro-drop of fluid now....

We re-installed the air filter box, filled up the power steering fluid reservoir to the proper level, started the engine, and turned the front wheels slowly from side-to-side multiple times and then re-checked the fluid level in the reservoir. The fluid level stayed right where it belongs. I will continue to check that fluid level every morning for the next several days just to be sure....

We put the tools away, cleaned up, and then Wayne, his lovely wife Christine, and I headed out for another outstanding Lexington-style BBQ lunch. Yet another great time together there in Spencer. Thanks again, Wayne!
